Diabetes Mellitus, more commonly known as diabetes, is a metabolic disease that causes our blood sugar levels to be higher than usual. Insulin, which is a hormone produced by our pancreas, moves the sugar in our blood to our cells to be store and utilize as energy. A person who suffers from diabetes is unable to make enough insulin, and neither can their body make use of it properly. It leaves the high levels of blood sugar untreated, which damages their kidneys, nerves, eyes, and organs.

The cause of diabetes is not the same for everyone. It can even vary from individual to individual. For some, it depends on their family history, genetic makeup, ethnicity, environmental factors, and health.

What are the Types of Diabetes?

There are three main types of diabetes as explained below:

Type 1 Diabetes

This type of diabetes is an autoimmune disease. The pancreatic cells are attacked and destroyed by our immune system. About 10 percent of all diabetic patients have been diagnosed with this type.

Type 2 Diabetes

In type 2 diabetes, the body is unable to use insulin properly. It causes blood sugar levels to rise to an abnormal level.

Gestational Diabetes

This type is more common in pregnant women. During their pregnancy, the placenta produces certain hormones. These hormones block insulin. It causes the blood sugar levels to rise that can cause harm not only to the pregnancy but can also affect the baby’s health.

  • Increased thirst
  • Weight loss
  • Increased hunger
  • Fatigue

In addition to these, some rare symptoms may vary among men and women. Men with diabetes may also have weak muscle strength, loss of libido, and erectile dysfunction. Whereas, in women, it may range from having itchy, dry skin, and getting urinary tract and yeast infections.
